Self Isolation : Day # 22

2014 Andrew Will ‘Esploso’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Andrew Will Winery is one of my favorite Washington State producers, crafting some truly compelling wines. The perfect combination of power, grace, and longevity, his wines (especially the single vineyard blends) are some of the best in the U.S.A. While the vines thrive in the sun-drenched vineyards east of the Cascade Mountains the wines are born on drizzly Vashon Island, a quick ferry ride from Seattle.

The 2014 ‘Esploso’ is the second vintage from Chris’ son Will Camarda and shows his potential as a winemaker. On first sip, it feels like it will be overly taxing: too rich and heavily oaked. Thankfully, however, it comes to life mid-palate with building tannins and acidity that keep it lively through the finish; similar to a 300-pound ballet dancer that somehow floats effortlessly across the stage. Flavors of red and black cherry, cassis, and tart raspberry are joined by notes of vanilla bean, polished leather and clove. This medium-plus bodied red was delicious with gooey grilled cheese plunged into spicy carrot-ginger soup.
